Early Life & Education

Early Career & Teaching Days

Before stepping into politics, Murmu worked as a teacher and later served as a government employee at the Odisha Irrigation Department. Her early professional years were marked by a deep commitment to education and social service, laying the foundation for her future leadership.


Entry into Politics

Droupadi Murmu’s political career began in 1997 when she was elected as a councilor in Rairangpur, Odisha. Her leadership skills soon earned her the position of Vice Chairperson of Rairangpur Municipality. She later joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and was elected as an MLA twice from Rairangpur (2000 & 2004).


Ministerial Roles in Odisha

As a minister in Odisha’s BJP-BJD coalition government (2000-2004), Murmu handled key portfolios like Transport, Commerce, Fisheries, and Animal Resources Development. Her work in these sectors brought significant improvements to the state’s rural economy and infrastructure.


Governor of Jharkhand (2015-2021)

Murmu created history in 2015 by becoming the first female Governor of Jharkhand. During her tenure, she upheld constitutional values and worked extensively on tribal rights, education, and social welfare programs. Her ability to maintain harmony between the state government and tribal communities earned her widespread respect.


Becoming the President of India

In 2022, the Bharatiya Janata Party nominated Droupadi Murmu as its Presidential candidate. Her nomination was historic, as she became the first tribal woman to contest for the highest office. She won the election with a significant majority, taking oath as the 15th President of India on July 25, 2022.
